Pasadena Tournament of Roses Announces 2019 Float Awards

The Tournament of Roses awarded 24 floats with official honors in the 130th Rose Parade presented by Honda. These awards recognize excellence in a variety of categories and specifications. The 2019 Sweepstakes Trophy, the most beautiful entry: encompassing float design, floral presentation and entertainment, was presented to The UPS Store, Inc.

The 2019 Rose Parade float award-winners are (alphabetically):

  • The UPS Store, Inc. won the Sweepstakes award for the most beautiful entry, encompassing float design, floral presentation and entertainment with their entry “Books Keep Us On Our Toes” built by Fiesta.
  • Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day won the Americana award for the most outstanding depiction of national treasures and traditions with their entry “Garden Fresh” built by Phoenix.
  • Burbank Tournament of Roses Association won the Animation award for the most outstanding use of animation with their entry “Stompin’ Good Time” which was self-built.
  • Northwestern Mutual won the Bob Hope Humor Award for the most whimsical and amusing float with their entry “Spend Your Life Living” built by Fiesta.
  • Trader Joe’s Company won the Crown City Innovator award for the most outstanding use of imagination, innovation and technology with their entry “Ride Captain Ride” built by Phoenix.
  • Sierra Madre Rose Float Association won the Director award for the most outstanding artistic design and use of floral and non-floral materials with their entry “Harmony’s Garden” which was self-built.
  • Cal Poly Universities won the Extraordinaire award for the most extraordinary float with their entry “Far Out Frequencies” which was self-built.
  • Western Asset Management Company won the Fantasy award for the most outstanding display of fantasy and imagination with their entry “Yellow Submarine” which was built by Phoenix.
  • La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association won the Founder award for the most outstanding float built and decorated by volunteers from a community or organization with their entry “Tree Frog Night!” which was self-built.
  • Big Bear Rose Parade Association won the Golden State for the most outstanding depiction of life in California with their entry “Play-Rest-Repeat” which was built by Fiesta.
  • Stella Rosa Wines won the Grand Marshal for the most outstanding creative concept and float design with their entry “Taste The Magic featuring Kool & The Gang” built by Fiesta.
  • China Airlines won the International award for the most outstanding float from outside the U.S. with their entry “Rhythm of Taiwan” built by AES.
  • United Sikh Mission won the Isabella Coleman award for the most outstanding presentation of color and color harmony through floral design with their entry “A Divine Melody Resonates In All” built by Phoenix.
  • Donate Life won the Judges award for the most outstanding float design and dramatic impact with their entry “Rhythm of the Heart” built by Fiesta.
  • Easterseals won the Leishman Public Spirit award for the most outstanding floral presentation from a non-commercial participant with their entry “Celebrating Easterseals 100 Years of Disability Services” built by Fiesta.
  • South Pasadena Tournament of Roses won the Mayor award for the most outstanding float from a participating city with their entry “Three Little Birds” which was self-built.
  • Underground Service Alert of Southern California (DigAlert) won the Past President award for the most outstanding innovation in the use of floral and non-floral materials with their entry “Backyard Harmony” built by Fiesta.
  • City of Hope won the President award the most outstanding use and presentation of flowers with their entry “Harmony of Hope” built by Phoenix.
  • City of Alhambra won the Princess award for the most outstanding floral presentation among entries 35 feet and under in length for their entry “Home Tweet Home” built by Phoenix.
  • Farmers Insurance Group won the Queen award for the most outstanding presentation of roses with their entry “A Carousel of Experience” built by Phoenix.
  • Universal Pictures & Dreamworks Animation presents How To Train Your Dragon won the Showmanship award for the most outstanding display of showmanship and entertainment with their entry “How to Train Your Dragon – The Hidden World” built by AES.
  • Shriners Hospitals for Children won the Theme award for the most outstanding presentation of the Rose Parade theme with their entry “Fezzy’s Garden of Hope and Healing built by Phoenix.
  • City of Torrance/ Torrance Rose Float Association won the Tournament Volunteer award for the most outstanding floral presentation of the Rose Parade theme among floats 35 feet and under in length with their entry “The Power of Music” built by Fiesta.
  • Dole Packaged Foods won the Wrigley Legacy award for the most outstanding display of floral presentation, float design and entertainment with their entry “Rhythm of Paradise” built by Fiesta.

Scores are based on criteria such as creative design, floral craftsmanship, artistic merit, computerized animation, thematic interpretation, floral and color presentation, and dramatic impact.

This year’s judges – Preston Bailey, Michael E. Berry, and Kimberly Oldis – reviewed each float during judging sessions that take place during the decorating stages before the parade. The judges used their scores from the judging sessions to determine the trophy recipients.
