Supports National Campaign Encouraging Young People to “GYT”
During STD Awareness Month
The fourth annual GYT: Get Yourself Tested campaign kicks off National STD Awareness Month (April) with new initiatives on-air, online, and in more than 5,000 health centers across the nation. GYT is a national campaign supported by a broad coalition of partners, including Planned Parenthood, designed to address the high rates of STDs among those under 25.
In support of GYT, Planned Parenthood Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley will offer STD testing at no cost to patients on Wednesday, April 18th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at their location at 1045 N. Lake Avenue in Pasadena. Planned Parenthood health centers offer low or no cost STD testing throughout the year, and they welcome patients of every background.
“Getting tested for sexually transmitted infections is a basic part of staying healthy,” said Sheri Bonner, President of Planned Parenthood Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley. “Fear, lack of health insurance, and misinformation keep too many people from getting tested. The truth is, testing is easier than ever before, and Planned Parenthood is here to help everyone stay healthy, year after year.”
As many as one in two sexually active young people will contract an STD by age 25 — and most won’t know it. According to the CDC, approximately half of the estimated 19 million STDs occurring in the United States each year are among people 25 and younger. GYT encourages young people to talk with health care providers and partners about getting tested for STDs.
GYT public service messages air throughout the year on MTV channels with cross promotions with health centers and community organizations. Extensive information resources — including a dedicated website (www.GYTnow.org), which provides basic information about common STDs, talking tips, and a zip code locator to find local testing locations — as well as a mobile testing locator, GYTNOW (498669) — provide the audience with more information.
