Get back on track with your fitness and nutrition to bring back the holiday spirit this season

The holiday season is my favorite time of year. The big turkey on the table and the music on the radio make it hard not to look forward to gathering around the table, bundled up in the cold weather, to enjoy great food with family and friends. But if you’ve had a rough year and let your fitness and eating habits fall apart, you’re probably dreading the idea of getting in front of people hearing what everyone might have to say. So while we still have the chance, let’s double down our efforts and get in shape this holiday season!

The first thing you’ll want to do is figure out what your goals are and then hash out a plan of attack on how you’re going to get on track to looking hot for the holidays. The two main things you want to focus on are your eating habits and your activity levels, and always remember, if a program sounds too good to be true, don’t try it. In my experience with clients, I’ve seen too many dangerous diets, pills, and workouts that will seriously hurt you if you don’t be careful.

For people who are interested in losing weight, a pound a week is definitely a great place to start, but don’t let the scale dictate your thoughts. Weight fluctuates very easily, so you have to understand that an increase in weight does not necessarily equal an increase in body fat. If you feel that you’re starting to get a little too obsessed with what the scale says, consider reducing the frequency of when you weigh in to once or twice a month.

Your caloric consumption plays a huge role in helping you shed body fat, so it’s important to take a look at what you’re consuming. The biggest culprits are sugary and calorically-dense drinks, and that’s not just sodas. Alcohol and mixed drinks pack on a ton of unnecessary calories per drink. Coffee can go from zero calories to a few hundred with the help of a little cream and sugar. Don’t forget, your boba could do horrible damage to your body if consumed on the regular. By cutting out high calorie drinks, you’ll start to see huge results in your body composition.

It’s tough to imagine a healthy lifestyle that doesn’t include a solid workout program. Before you run off to lock into a long term gym membership, sign up for group classes, or hire your own personal trainer, save yourself some money this holiday season and just jump on Google to try out a beginner’s exercise routine. Don’t get so caught up in the idea of fitness that you forget to actually start. With so many great programs out there, it’s all about testing what works for you and sticking to it for the long haul.

So join me in making some changes this holiday to eat better, train harder, and feel what it’s like to finally nail your fitness goals!
